A Strong Week 1 for the Knights

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

Saturday afternoon, the Liggett Knights took the field against the Maine South EHawks. A rather one sided series with many highlights that the Knights found themselves on the winning side for.

After a shaky start for the Knights, they found themselves down 1-0 after the opening kickoff due to a mishap by Leo Muller, but they were able to respond quickly, evening the score at 1-1 with only 30 seconds played. From there the EHawks had no answer, and the Knights kept scoring, making the final score a whopping 9-2, in which senior Nicholas Cardella led the way with five goals and two assists, followed by junior Carsten Higbie who had three goals and one assist and sophomore Leo Muller who netted his only goal of the series but had an outstanding four assists to back it up.

Game 2 was a bit closer, but the Knights still controlled the whole game. They were able to do basically whatever they wanted for the full five minutes, however, they did get a bit too cocky and let in two goals. The final score was 4-2, with Nicholas Cardella and Carsten Higbie once again leading the way with three goals and one goal respectively.

By this time, it was clear the Knights wanted the 3-0 sweep, and it was clear to the EHawks as well. The Knights came out strong and ended the series strong, winning in convincing 6-3 fashion. Sophomore Leo Muller was unable to find the back of the net this game, but he was able to make his mark as a passer with three assists in game 3, which was crucial in setting up each of Cardella and Higbie’s three goals each.

With this newfound momentum, the Knights are hoping to ride this wave throughout the next couple weeks. Despite the one-sided series, there’s still room for improvement for the Knights, such as their goal line defense, judging by the fact that the Knights combined for one save throughout the series. Their next match is Saturday, April 11, where they will look to improve their record to 2-0 on the year, with five games remaining after this next week, plus playoffs if they should make it.
